According to official town records and local historians, the first Kindergarten class at Dundas Central Public School was formed in 1873, making it one of the very first Kindergarten programs in North America to be integrated into a public education system.
Please join us for the official unveiling of our Kindergarten Heritage Plaque at Dundas Central Public School:
73 Melville Street, Dundas, Ontario
Thursday, September 22nd, 2011
Our Barbeque and Open House will be from 5 pm until 7 pm. Ceremonies will start at 6:00 pm.
The school building is an architectural landmark (a designated structure under the Ontario Heritage Act) as well as a cornerstone of the residential community within which it is situated. As part of the Open House, staff, parents and students will be on site and the classrooms will be open, enabling the viewer to see current classroom structure and organization.
The school is currently a JK to Grade 8 institution and for the past 154 years has been delivering education in Ontario continuously since 1857, when it was called the Dundas Union School. At one time there was a High School located in a separate building, situated behind the newer additions to the present day structure.
Dundas Central is steeped in the history and education of this community and province - its students, teachers and principals, whether past or present, hold it in high esteem, not only because of the education it provides but for the many memories and friendships it has garnered over the years. We are very proud of our school and think ‘Education is Central.’
